The history of the Chicago Cubs goes all the way back to 1870, when they played in the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP). In 1876, it joined the National League as one of the initial eight teams of that organization. Back in those days, they were known as the Chicago White Stockings, and they went on to win six NL pennants in this original incarnation. After a few more name changes (they were the Colts for a while, then the Orphans), the team finally decided to call themselves the Chicago Cubs in 1903.
The Cubs have played their games in Wrigley Field, famous for its ivy-covered outfield walls, since 1916. On July 6, 2016, the team wore Chicago Cubs throwback jerseys to celebrate a century of play at this renowned baseball park.
The Cubs won back-to-back World Series titles in 1907 and 1908, but after these triumphs they would not win another championship until the 21st century. They lost the World Series in 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938, and 1945. During the 1932 Series, the Cubs gave up one of the most famous home runs in baseball history: Babe Ruth's “called shot” in Game 3. In 2016, the Cubs finally broke their record-making World Series "drought" by beating the Cleveland Indians in seven games.
