The Oakland Raiders were known for decades as one of the most intimidating teams in the NFL, but they didn’t always have that uniquely ominous “Silver and Black” look. When the team joined the AFL in 1960, the Oakland Raiders’ jerseys actually sported a black, gold, and white color scheme. Three losing seasons later, Al Davis took over head coaching duties, established the Raiders’ soon-to-be-famous uniform colors, and led the team to a 10-4 record in his first season. Davis would step down as coach prior to the 1966 season and serve as owner/general manager for the franchise until his death in 2011.
Super Bowl II marked the Raiders' first attempt at winning football's biggest honor; unfortunately, they lost to the Green Bay Packers, 33-14. The Raiders were just getting started, though. They racked up a winning record in every season of the '70s and in 1977 they won Super Bowl XI by defeating the Minnesota Vikings. The Raiders added a second Super Bowl championship in 1981 against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV. From 1982 to 1994, the franchise moved and was based in Los Angeles.
The second phase of the Oakland Raiders’ history began with the team’s return to their old homestead in 1995. Although this period is marked with many disappointments, they won several division championships and made their final Super Bowl appearance (XXXVII) in a 48-21 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The franchise officially relocated to Las Vegas in January 2020.
