One of the NHL's "Original Six" teams, the New York Rangers have a colorful history that extends back to 1926. They found success early on, winning the Stanley Cup in 1928 (making them the first champs from the U.S.), 1933, and 1940. They also lost three Stanley Cup Finals (1929, 1932, and 1937) during this time period.
The decades following their third Stanley Cup win were rough for the Rangers, unfortunately. Although they made the Stanley Cup Finals again in 1950, the mid-century incarnation of the Rangers often failed to get into the playoffs at all. The team’s move into Madison Square Garden in 1968 seemed to give them a new life. They returned to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1972 and 1979, only to fall short on each occasion. Fans began talking about a "Curse of 1940" that prevented the team of capturing another Cup.
The Curse finally ended in 1994 when team captain Mark Messier led the squad through an amazing regular season, in which the Rangers racked up 112 points, and eventual post-season triumph by beating the Vancouver Canucks in a hard-fought seven-game Stanley Cup Finals. Although they have yet to win another Stanley Cup—they lost the Finals in 2014—this tough team should never be underestimated.
