The year was 1947. A brand new team, led by high-scoring rookie Joe Fulks, delivered a crushing blow to their more seasoned opponents in the fifth game of the BBA championship.
This team would become the Golden State Warriors, one of the most recognizable teams in the league, and join the NBA following its merger with the BBA. However, few moments in sports history would live up to their underdog defeat of the Chicago Stags in their first season.
Formed in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors, the Golden State Warriors underwent several transformations. They moved to San Francisco in 1962 before becoming the Golden State Warriors in 1971.
Likewise, the Golden State Warriors jerseys have undergone their own transformations in the team’s 75-year history. Early versions had a simple design. While the team was located in Philadelphia, it featured serif font and deep orange lettering.
The jersey retained this simple design in the early years following its move to San Francisco. However, the design grew more complex once the team moved to California, first featuring a Golden Gate Bridge in the mid-1960s. This was followed by an outline of the state of California in 1971. This was also when the team changed its name from the San Francisco Warriors to the Golden State Warriors.
Throughout Golden State Warriors jersey history, the team’s away uniforms featured their signature royal blue color. Still, by the early sixties, the letters and numbers changed from orange with a yellow outline to yellow with an orange outline.
By the mid-60s, the team's away uniforms lost their orange accents entirely. Golden State Warriors players would don this color scheme until the late 1980s. This is when orange would reappear on some versions of the jerseys.
The team was off to a great start in its early years, winning its first championship in its inaugural year and doing well through the 1950s and 1960s, and in 1975 the Warriors captured an NBA championship by defeating the Washington Bullets in 4 straight games. Following the 1975 championship the team struggled to find its footing during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
That all changed in the mid to late 1980s, when the team was joined by the “TMC” trio, Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin. While another championship win remained elusive, this talented trio revived interest in the team. This set them up for future success.
Overall the 1980s and 1990s were a golden era for the sport as legends like Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan were in their prime. Throwback NBA jerseys from this era are popular among collectors.
Though the team did not win an NBA championship during that era, it would go on to become one of the most successful franchises in the league. They would later win four championships between 2015 and 2022, led by stars Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.
Our throwback Golden State Warriors jerseys were designed to bring you back to the 1980s and 90s. With their royal blue color and gold details, these jerseys are as iconic as the players themselves throughout the years.
