The Cleveland Indians began in 1894 as a Michigan-based minor league team named the Grand Rapids Rustlers. Their major league history begins in 1901 when, as the Cleveland Bluebirds (or, less officially, the Blues), they became one of the eight charter members of the American League. The team went through a couple name changes—they were the Broncos, then the Naps (short for Napoleons)—prior to settling on their current handle, the Indians, in 1915.
The Indians won the 1920 World Series, beating the Brooklyn Robins in one of the few best-of-nine matches in the annals of the Fall Classic. In game 5, Indians second baseman Bill Wambsganss made the first (and still only) unassisted triple play in World Series history.
17-year-old pitcher Bob Feller joined the team in 1936 and soon became one of the superstars of the game. He was one of the forces behind the Indians' highly successful 1948 season, which ended with the team claiming their second World Series championship. Around this time, the Indians, under the guidance of owner/president Bill Veeck, helped break down the color barrier in the major leagues by signing Negro League stars Larry Doby (first African-American player in the AL) and Satchel Paige.
The Indians won another AL pennant in 1954, but the next few decades were difficult for the team. They came roaring back, though, after the opening of Jacobs Field (now Progressive Field) in 1994. Seemingly revitalized, the team went on to win five division titles and two AL pennants before the end of the decade. They're still tough customers today, with a legion of devoted fans.
