Few people would deny that the San Francisco Giants are tough competitors these days, with World Series wins in 2010, 2012, and 2014. The history of this franchise, one of the longest in baseball, goes back to 1883 when they were founded as the New York Gothams. In 1886, they became the New York Giants. This version of the team was a dominating force in baseball for decades. The Giants nabbed World Series titles in 1905, 1921, 1922, 1933, and 1954. They were also responsible for some of the most famous moments in major league history, like Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" (1951) and Willie Mays' over-the-shoulder catch at the 1954 World Series.
The team relocated to San Francisco for the 1958 season, which kicked off a difficult period lasting several decades. The team won the NL pennant in 1962, but would not return to the World Series until 1989. The Giants did field some pretty impressive players around this time, however, such as future Hall of Fame inductees Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal.
The so-called Barry Bonds era began when the legendary power hitter joined the squad in 1993. Bonds' mighty bat helped the Giants win NL West titles in 1997, 2000, and 2003. But it was the next decade that turned the Giants into a true powerhouse, as they won three World Series titles in a five-year period.
